Africa Aweee Foundation is in Sierra Leone after partnering with Desert Flower Africa to construct a school in Hastings outside the capital Freetown. Africa Aweee Foundation is a non-profit making organization that started for the sole purpose of supporting children, youth and women in Africa to create a better future for themselves.
With funds provided by Africa Aweee through Desert Flowers, the organization is in the country to commission the newly constructed first Africa Aweee School in Hastings.
Given the background of Africa Aweee Foundation, founder Lissa Boyer-Telmer said the Africa Aweee is grounded on social impact for Africa to fight against the root causes of poverty, such as lack of education and the low social status of women and girls in the African societies.
Lisa said her commitment to the Africa Aweee Foundation is a new task.
‘I appreciate the work of Waris Darie. I really didn’t have to think long about getting involved. I am happy to partner with passion with the Desert Flower family, she said.’
Lisa noted that as a human right activist and developmentally oriented person and Waris Darie they’ve both been campaigning for children’s and women’s rights for years.
These two muscular women have one goal a passion for serving humanity together.
The Executive Director of Caritas Freetown who also doubles as President of Desert Flower, Rev. Father, Peter Konteh speaking earlier on said Caritas Freetown is glad to partner noting that when emergencies happen they are the first to reach the area and last to leave.
‘We at Caritas Freetown are involved in everything that deals with human development. In the Desert Flower, we support the children and trained them to stay in school. We are currently working with over 1.500 girls across the country, providing them with financial support, education opportunities and health care services, he said.’
Father Konteh noted that in Desert Flower they encourage children not to mutilate and this is done through education.
He said Desert Flower has constructed a school in No 2 and that the school has transformed not only the pupils but the community as a whole.
‘Desert Flower through Aweee Foundation has constructed a school at Hastings and they are here to launch the school.
Father Konteh noted that sometime back the head teacher of the newly constructed school approached him for the construction of additional classrooms but the appeal came at a time when there was nothing to promise.
He said just after the conversation, he received a call from Walter that they now have a partner ready to construct a school and that was how the school construction in Hastings came about.
Aweee Foundation is a partner and this is their first-ever school constructed in Sierra Leone.
Walter Lutschinger from Desert Flower Africa in his statement said he has been to Sierra Leone on a number of occasions noting that the founder of Desert Flower, Waris Darie founded the organization with the aim of educating girls and fighting to end Genital mutilation.
He said Waris became famous modelling who spoke on FGM and was appointed ambassador to end FGM by the United Nations.
Waris he said has written a book on her life and that the book became a best seller.
‘What we need is to invest in education and we are a bridge in bringing people to Africa to come and support. We are very proud and we will continue to bring more people to Sierra Leone to come and invest in the education sector.
This is the fourth school we have constructed in Sierra Leone, he said.’
