On the 23rd of January 2021, the Desert Flower Foundation Africa-Sierra Leone organized a one day FGM Awareness Workshop at the Commit and Act centre, Torwama in Bo on the Theme: Enhancing women and Girls to promote awareness on FGM in Sierra Leone.
This workshop marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Bo community as it gave our beneficiaries and their caregivers the opportunity to learn and ask questions on pertinent issue relating to FGM and child protection. The workshop which was focused on enhancing women and girls to promote Awareness on FGM and child protection arose the attention of lots of stakeholders ranging from community chiefs, Mamie Queens, Teachers, journalists and Youth Leaders in the Bo community. It was a well interactive and interesting workshop as Participants were highly involved in the session.
Doctor Francess one of the facilitators of the workshop who doubles as the Desert Flower Foundation Medical Doctor, was able to educate the participants about the dangers of FGM and child protection and encouraged the community stakeholders to initiate awareness and advocacy on anti-FGM, gender and Protection Issues in their various communities. Participants were generally enhanced to lead and advocate for change in their communities. Inputs where made from beneficiaries and parents /caregivers who were highly grateful and happy about the workshop. They shared their experiences on FGM and Gender related issues in their respective homes and communities.
Some of the participants vow to take up responsibilities to lead and advocate for change.
With the help of our donors, the Foundation will continue to strive to eradicate FGM through educational sponsorship and awareness campaign.
