On the 3rd of August 2020, in Sierra Leone we saw thousands of Primary school pupils walking to go and take the NPSE as an entrance examination into Junior secondary School amid the COVID-19 pandemic while following all safety measures put in place by the government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Health and the National Emergency Operation Centre. Across the country, Desert Flower Foundation has Beneficiaries in Bo, Lungi, Magburukar, Freetown, Newton and three schools operating in her name (Werner Holzer Desert Flower School – Allen Town Community; Rotary Club Heidenharm Desert Flower School, Tombo Community and Kieran Chaplin Desert Flower School – No. 2 River community). NPSE Candidates from these different locations across the country in the Foundation took the examination of which testified that the monthly funds provided to them is one of the reasons why they have reached this level in their educational career. Parents of these beneficiaries continued to express their thanks and appreciation to the Foundation as they promise to keep their children from FGM. Approximately 200 pupils out of the 1075 beneficiaries on the Desert Flower Foundation Sponsorship across the country took the NPSE this year.
Desert Flower Foundation Sierra Leone uses education as the greatest pillar to eradicate FGM in the country. This approach is believed to change the mindset of young girls from FGM before they turn 18; supported by lots of sensitization and awareness about the practice of FGM thereby equipping them to make rational decisions after 18years. We prepare the minds of these young girls about the harmful effects of FGM from age 0-18 and above through workshops, awareness stickers messages and community sensitization.
We intend to help more girls achieve their educational dreams whilst we eradicate FGM.
