The Desert Flower Foundation on Tuesday July 23rd 2019 completed its quarterly financial support to some deprived Sierra Leonean school-going children in their kindergarten stage until they have attained or completed university education.

The quarterly financial support which was described by many as a timely gesture targeted deprived communities nationwide such as Allen Town, Dwerzark, Central Freetown in the Western Urban District, Western Area; Bo, Bo District, Southern Region; Kaffu Bullom, Port Loko District, North-west Region; Koya, Western Rural District, Western Area; and Magburaka, Tonkonlili District, Northern Region of Sierra Leone, respectively.

 

The quarterly financial support is targeting some 1,000 school -going girls and their Mothers in various parts of Sierra Leone. For a girl to benefit from the Foundation’s educational scholarship and other financial support, she must not enter into marital relationship or mutilated until she finishes her secondary and tertiary education.

The Project Supervisor, Wuyatta Genda said the project would give more support to better shape the mindset of girls who started from nursery to the age of consent as they would all focus on how to better educate themselves. She advised parents to always monitor their children, as they would frown at anyone who goes outside the principles and philosophy of the Desert Flower Foundation.

Wuyatta Genda described education as an essential tool for the girl-child. She said with education the sky would be their limit in achieving their dreams.

She disclosed that they also provide the girls with counseling during the entire duration of their participation in the Project.

She maintained that there is a very cordial relationship between the Project and the mothers of the children and that they have been very cooperative in honoring the contractual agreement.

There was huge turnout from families and beneficiaries during the payment periods in all locations nationwide. The Payment of Sponsorship funds was welcomed with great anxiety and happiness by parents (beneficiaries) of Desert Flower Foundation who were eagerly waiting for staff of the charitable organization.

Parents thanked Desert Flower Foundation for their continued support and asked that the project be replicated in areas that are not yet benefiting from Desert Flower Foundation project where there are many young girls.

The Founder of Desert Flower Foundation is International Super Model, Actress and Author Waris Dirie. Support for the girls is being done under the Foundation’s Save a Little Flower Project. Dirie is a fierce Activist against FGM, having herself had gone through difficulties growing up in her native Somalia. The Desert Flower Foundation was named after a movie depicting her life and her rise to global stardom. She was one time UN Special Ambassador against Harmful Traditional Practices.
